Environmental Injury Assessment

Damages to natural resources result from unplanned incidents such as vessel groundings, oil spills, dredging activities and construction related events. These incidents cannot be ignored and expertise to minimize further injury and allow suitable mitigation of the existing injury.  It is critical that scientific and technical expertise be utilized during response and environmental impact assessment to meet these goals.

Sea Byte Inc. has been responding to and conducting environmental injury assessments in the marine and coastal environment for more than twenty-five years.  Our people have experience working worldwide to facilitate solutions that are beneficial to the environment and amiable to all parties involved.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Rapid pro-active response to a potentially disastrous environmental incident such as vessel groundings and oil spills is critical in minimizing further damages and ensuring the best response possible is implemented. Decisions made during the initial response have significant effects on both the immediate and long term costs associated with an incident. We believe avoiding further environmental injury to critical habitats whenever possible provides the best outcome for our clients.

Sea Byte Inc. personnel have extensive experience working with response personnel to facilitate the best, most cost-effective response and mitigation possible. This includes management of response resources including personnel and equipment with the intent of minimizing environmental damages. These decisions are made using both the practical experience of our personnel as well as the scientific understanding of the effects of various response actions and decisions.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND OVERSIGHT

Environmental injury, particularly related to vessel groundings, occur in a variety of geographic locations.  Meaningful assessment and restoration/rehabilitation can be costly given the lack of resources available in remote locations.  Sea Byte Inc. has implemented many such undertakings using local personnel that are properly trained and managed. Avoiding the considerable expense of bringing teams of outside personnel to the location, we have successfully worked with local personnel and companies to implement cost effective, scientifically sound projects with minimal involvement of outside (imported) labor and personnel.  This cost-effective strategy is a win-win solution providing an influx of resources to local economies as well as creating pride among involved local stakeholders.

In areas where scientifically trained personnel are available, it is common that many academic personnel have minimal logistical experience conducting the particular types of restoration activities needed.  Sea Byte Inc. personnel have worked extensively with other scientists to improve methodologies and logistics and help minimize costs while ensuring the scientific validity of a restoration/rehabilitation project.

HABITAT RESTORATION

Sea Byte Inc. is a recognized leader in the field of coral reef restoration. The restoration of a coral reef injured by various activities such as a ship grounding should be initiated as soon as possible to facilitate maximum recovery with minimum lost services. While a variety of techniques are available, each grounding site has specific characteristics that may favor one technique over another. Sea Byte Inc. has been involved in the development of a variety of techniques and have implemented a variety of restoration techniques to ensure successful and cost-effective results. We have extensive experience designing and implementing programs that restore the environment to the best possible pre-injury condition using cost-effective, scientifically proven techniques.

Baseline and iMPACT STUDIES

During the implementation of construction projects, permitting agencies often require the characterization of biological resources that are present within a potential impact area and subsequently require the monitoring and/or mitigation for affected environmental resources. Such studies require scientific expertise to identify the environmental resources present and to estimate what the potential impact will be prior to implementation of the project. Sea Byte Inc. has been involved in the environmental impact assessment associated with a variety of construction projects including pipeline installations, piling and pier construction, dredging, and beach nourishment projects to name a few.

Our expertise includes conducting baseline studies in both marine and coastal areas throughout a variety of ecologically sensitive habitats including coral reefs, seagrass beds, oyster reefs and artificial reefs. The accurate assessment of environmental communities present is also a critical part of any impact assessment and also a critical part of the natural resource damage assessment process.
